We are pleased to share that Dr. Gavin Nixon offers Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) conveniently in our office — with flexible scheduling and great availability to meet your needs.
These diagnostic tests are valuable tools in evaluating nerve and muscle function. Whether a patient is experiencing pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, or is being considered for surgical intervention, EMG and NCS can help pinpoint the underlying cause. They are commonly used to assess conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, or nerve compression.
By offering these studies in-house, Dr. Nixon is able to provide timely testing and results, helping guide treatment decisions with greater efficiency and continuity of care.
What Is EMG & NCS
Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are diagnostic tools used to assess the function of your muscles and the nerves that control them. These tests help detect and evaluate nerve and muscle disorders that may be causing pain, weakness, or abnormal sensations.
You may be referred for EMG and NCS testing if you are experiencing symptoms such as numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or chronic pain. These tests help diagnose conditions such as:
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
-
Peripheral Neuropathy
-
Cervical or Lumbar Radiculopathy (Pinched Nerves)
-
Sciatica
-
Muscle Disorders (e.g., Myopathy, Muscular Dystrophy)
-
Nerve Injuries or Entrapments
-
Guillain-Barré Syndrome
-
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
-
NCS involves small electrical impulses applied to the skin to measure how fast your nerves transmit signals.
-
EMG uses a fine needle inserted into specific muscles to record electrical activity at rest and with movement.
Testing typically takes 30–60 minutes and is done in our office. While EMG may cause temporary discomfort, both tests are generally well-tolerated and do not require recovery time.
Minor bruising or soreness may occur at the EMG needle sites, but serious side effects are rare. Patients can usually return to normal activities right after testing.
EMG and NCS provide critical information for diagnosing neuromuscular conditions and guiding effective treatment plans, improving both function and quality of life.
