Botox® for Arm Spasticity
Arm spasticity can make everyday activities challenging by causing muscle stiffness, involuntary muscle contractions, pain, and reduced range of motion. Tasks such as dressing, eating, writing, reaching, and personal care may become increasingly difficult when muscles remain tight or difficult to control.
At Alpenglow Pain & Wellness in Anchorage, Alaska, Nichelle C. Renk, MD, who is board-certified in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, and Gavin Nixon, DO, who is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for upper extremity spasticity. Therapeutic Botox® injections can help reduce muscle overactivity, improve function, and enhance quality of life for patients living with spasticity.
What Is Arm Spasticity?
Spasticity is a neurological condition that causes muscles to become abnormally tight, stiff, or overactive due to disruption of communication between the brain, spinal cord, and muscles.
Arm spasticity most commonly affects the:
- Shoulder
- Upper arm
- Elbow
- Forearm
- Wrist
- Hand and fingers
Spasticity may range from mild muscle tightness to severe muscle contractions that significantly limit movement and function.
What Causes Arm Spasticity?
Arm spasticity is often associated with neurologic conditions affecting the brain or spinal cord, including:
- Stroke
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Cerebral palsy
- Spinal cord injury
- Brain tumors
- Other neurological disorders
When nerve pathways are disrupted, muscles may remain in a constant state of contraction, leading to stiffness, pain, and difficulty with movement.
Symptoms of Arm Spasticity
Symptoms vary depending on the severity of muscle involvement but may include:
- Muscle stiffness and tightness
- Difficulty bending or straightening the arm
- Clenched fist or curled fingers
- Limited range of motion
- Muscle spasms or involuntary contractions
- Pain and discomfort
- Difficulty with daily activities
- Reduced coordination and dexterity
- Abnormal arm positioning or posture
Over time, untreated spasticity may contribute to muscle shortening, joint stiffness, and reduced functional independence.
How Botox® Helps Treat Arm Spasticity
Botox® is FDA-approved for the treatment of upper limb spasticity. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals responsible for excessive muscle contractions, allowing the affected muscles to relax.
Therapeutic Botox® injections may help:
- Reduce muscle tightness and stiffness
- Improve arm and hand mobility
- Increase range of motion
- Reduce pain associated with muscle spasticity
- Improve positioning of the arm and hand
- Enhance participation in physical and occupational therapy
- Improve function during daily activities
Treatment is customized based on the specific muscles involved and each patient's functional goals.
What to Expect During Treatment
Therapeutic Botox® injections are performed in-office and typically take less than 30 minutes.
During treatment:
- A detailed evaluation is performed to identify affected muscle groups
- Targeted injections are administered into overactive muscles
- Ultrasound guidance may be used when appropriate for precision and safety
- Treatment plans are individualized based on symptom severity and treatment goals
Most patients tolerate treatment well and are able to return to normal activities shortly afterward.
Results typically begin to develop within several days to two weeks after treatment and may last approximately three months before repeat treatment is recommended.
