Saline Infusion Therapy
Dehydration, autonomic dysfunction, chronic migraines, and persistent headache disorders can significantly affect energy levels, concentration, circulation, and overall quality of life. For some patients, saline infusion therapy may help support hydration, improve symptoms, and promote overall wellness and recovery.
At Alpenglow Pain & Wellness in Anchorage, Alaska, Nichelle C. Renk, MD, who is board-certified in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, and Gavin Nixon, DO, who is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, offer saline infusion therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment approach for chronic migraines, headaches, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Our goal is to help patients improve hydration, circulation, symptom management, and daily functioning through personalized care.
What Is Saline Infusion Therapy?
Saline infusion therapy involves the administration of sterile intravenous (IV) fluids designed to help support hydration, circulation, and fluid balance within the body.
For patients with chronic migraines, autonomic dysfunction, or POTS, IV saline therapy may help improve symptoms related to dehydration, blood volume regulation, and nervous system dysfunction.
Treatment is performed in a monitored clinical setting and customized based on each patient’s symptoms and treatment goals.
Conditions That May Benefit from Saline Infusion Therapy
Saline infusion therapy may be beneficial for patients experiencing:
- Chronic migraines
- Severe or persistent headaches
- Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
- Autonomic dysfunction
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Fatigue and low energy levels
- Symptoms associated with dehydration
- Chronic illness-related hydration difficulties
For some patients, improved hydration and circulatory support may help reduce symptom severity and improve activity tolerance.
Saline Infusions for Migraines & Headaches
Patients with chronic migraines and severe headaches may experience symptom improvement with IV saline therapy, particularly when dehydration, autonomic dysfunction, or chronic nausea contribute to migraine flares.
Saline infusions may help:
- Support hydration and electrolyte balance
- Reduce headache severity
- Improve energy and recovery
- Help patients tolerate migraine symptoms more comfortably
- Support overall wellness during migraine flares
Saline infusion therapy may be used alongside other migraine treatments, including Botox®, Vyepti®, nerve blocks, and interventional pain management procedures.
Saline Infusions for POTS
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of autonomic nervous system dysfunction that may cause dizziness, rapid heart rate, fatigue, brain fog, weakness, and difficulty tolerating standing or physical activity.
For some patients with POTS, saline infusion therapy may help temporarily improve circulation, support blood volume, and reduce symptoms associated with orthostatic intolerance.
What to Expect During Treatment
Saline infusions are administered through a small IV placed into a vein while patients relax comfortably during treatment.
During the infusion:
- Vital signs may be monitored as needed
- Treatment is customized based on symptoms and provider recommendations
- Most sessions take approximately 30–90 minutes depending on the infusion plan
Many patients tolerate treatment well and are able to resume normal daily activities afterward.
