Botox® & Xeomin® for Bruxism & Masseter Tension
Chronic jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and masseter muscle tension can cause jaw pain, headaches, facial discomfort, and damage to the teeth over time. Many patients experience these symptoms without realizing they are clenching their jaw throughout the day or grinding their teeth while sleeping.
At Alpenglow Pain & Wellness in Anchorage, Alaska, Nichelle C. Renk, MD, who is board-certified in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, and Gavin Nixon, DO, who is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, offer Botox® and Xeomin® treatments to help relax overactive jaw muscles, reduce pain, and improve symptoms associated with bruxism and masseter muscle tension.
What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the involuntary clenching, grinding, or tightening of the teeth and jaw muscles. It commonly occurs during sleep but may also occur during waking hours, especially during periods of stress, concentration, or anxiety.
Over time, chronic bruxism can place excessive stress on the jaw joints, teeth, facial muscles, and surrounding structures.
Symptoms of Bruxism & Masseter Tension
Common symptoms may include:
- Jaw pain and tightness
- Teeth grinding during sleep
- Daytime jaw clenching
- Facial muscle soreness
- Morning headaches
- Tension headaches
- Ear pain or pressure
- TMJ discomfort
- Jaw fatigue when chewing
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Tooth wear, fractures, or dental damage
Some patients also notice enlargement of the masseter muscles, creating a wider or more square appearance along the jawline.
What Is the Masseter Muscle?
The masseter is one of the primary muscles responsible for chewing and jaw movement. When this muscle becomes overactive from chronic clenching or grinding, it can become enlarged and painful.
Overdeveloped masseter muscles may contribute to:
- Jaw pain and stiffness
- Facial tension
- Headaches
- TMJ-related symptoms
- A widened or square jawline appearance
How Botox® & Xeomin® Help Bruxism
Botox® and Xeomin® are neuromodulator medications that work by temporarily reducing the activity of overactive muscles.
When injected into the masseter muscles, treatment may help:
- Reduce jaw clenching
- Decrease teeth grinding
- Relieve jaw pain and muscle tension
- Improve headaches related to bruxism
- Reduce pressure on the TMJ joints
- Improve facial comfort and function
- Create a slimmer, more tapered jawline appearance in some patients
Treatment weakens excessive muscle contractions without affecting normal facial expression or your ability to chew and speak.
Botox® vs. Xeomin®
Both Botox® and Xeomin® are effective treatment options for bruxism and masseter muscle tension.
Benefits of treatment may include:
- Reduced muscle overactivity
- Improved jaw comfort
- Fewer tension headaches
- Less nighttime grinding
- Improved TMJ symptoms
- Enhanced quality of life
Your provider will determine which product is most appropriate based on your symptoms, treatment goals, and medical history.
What to Expect During Treatment
Treatment is performed in-office and typically takes less than 30 minutes.
During treatment:
- The masseter muscles are evaluated and identified
- Small injections are placed into targeted muscle groups
- Treatment is customized based on symptom severity and muscle size
- Most patients experience minimal discomfort
There is little to no downtime, and most patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
When Will I See Results?
Patients often begin noticing improvement within one to two weeks after treatment.
Results may include:
- Less jaw clenching and grinding
- Reduced muscle tension
- Fewer headaches
- Improved comfort while chewing
- Decreased facial pain and tightness
Benefits typically last approximately 3–4 months, and repeat treatments may be recommended to maintain results.
