Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
Numbness, tingling, weakness, burning pain, and nerve-related symptoms can interfere with daily activities and may indicate an underlying nerve or muscle condition. Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are specialized diagnostic tests used to evaluate how well your nerves and muscles are functioning and help identify the source of your symptoms.
At Alpenglow Pain & Wellness in Anchorage, Alaska, Gavin Nixon, DO, who is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, performs comprehensive EMG and nerve conduction studies to evaluate a wide range of neuromuscular and nerve-related conditions. These studies help provide accurate diagnosis and guide personalized treatment recommendations.
What Are Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)?
EMG and NCS are diagnostic tests used to evaluate the health and function of nerves, muscles, and the electrical signals that travel between them.
- Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) measure how quickly and effectively electrical signals move through the nerves.
- Electromyography (EMG) evaluates muscle activity and helps identify abnormalities related to nerve or muscle dysfunction.
These tests are often performed together to help diagnose conditions involving nerve compression, nerve injury, neuropathy, or muscle disorders.
Why Might an EMG/NCS Be Recommended?
Dr. Nixon may recommend EMG and NCS if you are experiencing symptoms such as:
- Numbness or tingling
- Burning or electric-like pain
- Muscle weakness
- Radiating arm or leg pain
- Neck or back pain with nerve symptoms
- Muscle cramping or spasms
- Loss of coordination or balance
- Persistent nerve-related symptoms after injury or surgery
These studies can help determine whether symptoms are related to nerve compression, nerve damage, muscle disorders, or other neurological conditions.
Conditions Commonly Evaluated with EMG/NCS
EMG and NCS may help diagnose:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Cubital tunnel syndrome
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Sciatica and lumbar radiculopathy
- Cervical radiculopathy
- Pinched nerves
- Nerve injuries and entrapment syndromes
- Muscle disorders and weakness
- Chronic nerve pain conditions
What to Expect During Testing
EMG and NCS are performed in-office and typically take between 30 to 90 minutes depending on the areas being evaluated.
During nerve conduction testing, small electrodes are placed on the skin to measure how electrical signals travel through the nerves. During the EMG portion of the study, a small needle electrode is inserted into specific muscles to evaluate muscle and nerve activity.
Most patients tolerate testing well, and the information gathered can provide valuable insight into the cause of symptoms and help guide treatment planning.
Benefits of (EMG) and (NCS)
EMG/NCS testing may help:
- Identify the source of nerve pain or weakness
- Confirm nerve compression or nerve injury
- Differentiate between nerve and muscle conditions
- Guide treatment recommendations
- Assist with surgical planning when necessary
- Monitor progression of neuromuscular conditions
