What Are Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)?

EMG and NCS are diagnostic tests used to evaluate the health and function of nerves, muscles, and the electrical signals that travel between them.

• Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) measure how quickly and effectively electrical signals move through the nerves.
• Electromyography (EMG) evaluates muscle activity and helps identify abnormalities related to nerve or muscle dysfunction.

These tests are often performed together to help diagnose conditions involving nerve compression, nerve injury, neuropathy, or muscle disorders.

What to Expect During Testing

During nerve conduction testing, small electrodes are placed on the skin to measure how electrical signals travel through the nerves. During the EMG portion of the study, a small needle electrode is inserted into specific muscles to evaluate muscle and nerve activity.

Most patients tolerate testing well, and the information gathered can provide valuable insight into the cause of symptoms and help guide treatment planning.
